MY FIGHT AGAINST RACISM
"I experienced racism at the age of ten when I was insulted with monkey slurs at a football match."
"Anyone who looks the other way is just as involved," says Kofi Schulz in the interview with Heute talk. The new hero of the spusu SKN St. Pölten, together with his friend Cory Burke, take a stand against racism.
50,000 people protested in Vienna against racism and police brutality. That is entirely in the spirit of Kofi Schulz and Cory Burke. The two new stars from St. Pölten dismantled WSG Tirol 5-0, and their protest provided the picture of the first matchday. Both put their right fists in the air as they celebrated the goal and bowed their heads. "We were shocked when we heard about George Floyd's death. We immediately agreed that we had to make a statement," Kofi Schulz explains in the interview.
"We have to protest against racism. We can no longer watch. 'No to Racism' is all well and good, but something must finally happen now."
Have you ever experienced racism? Yes, I experienced much racism firsthand. As a child, it was not easy for me. I was insulted by the parents of the opposition team with monkey noises at the age of ten.
"We have to fight hate with love!"
Now the whole world is aware of it. It doesn't matter whether it's black or white. If we fight this together, there is no more room for racism. You have to fight hate with love. Whoever looks the other way is just as involved.
Like striker Corey Burke, the 30-year-old joined the club after the transfer ban from St. Pölten in February. Kofi Schulz is a very fast wingback WSG Tirol could not stop him. Each of his dribbles was successful, he scored a goal and assisted a goal for Corey Burke.
"The fight is not over yet!" Kofi Schulz wants solidarity: "I hope that something comes from the Bundesliga too. The louder we scream, the more we are heard. Five or six people are not enough".
